Ojai Valley Inn Wedding – Great Wedding Exit Idea

Here is a lovely image from a destination wedding that we planned in Ojai, CA at the Ojai Valley Inn. Gorgeous bride and groom, fun wedding music with a great live band, gorgeous wedding venues in various spots around the Inn, and a perfect summer evening for a wedding. The bride and groom wanted to have a big, elaborate  exit down an allee of wedding sparklers held aloft by all of their friends and family. The photographers, Amy and Stuart Photography, captured the moment perfectly. You can also see this image on Glo.com . We love to have opportunities to do destination weddings like this one! It was a fun and memorable wedding!

Michael Pollan Dinner Party in Montecito

Michael Pollan at a Merryl Brown Events Dinner Party

Michael Pollan with Ashley and Brian from Duo Catering

This is a photo of one of my favorite small sustainable events this year! We had the great honor of planning, hosting and attending a dinner for the amazing author, Michael Pollan. The talented team of Ashley and Brian at Duo Catering created a fabulous menu of local, seasonal fare with great wines and locally brewed beer. It was, for me, an evening that I will never forget, as Michael Pollan is truly one of the great inspirations of my life. If you have not read his books, you must buy them and read them, as they are real game changers: The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food, The Botany of Desire, Food Rules. These are my favorites, though there are others too. He has a wonderful mind and a great sense of humor! I am indebted to the Orfalea Foundation for asking me to plan this magical evening.

Yellow Event Planning Inspiration

Great ideas for a yellow party

What could be cheerier and sweeter then a yellow color theme for weddings? In this current economic environment, we all need a little something to lift our moods!

We did a wedding inspiration photo shoot last year where we featured a lot of lovely yellow elements and some of them are shown here. The images on the left and right in the top row are by the talented Melissa Musgrove, as is the center photo and the photo on the bottom left.

Wedding planning inspiration is all around us!

Brilliant Inspiration with Simon T. Bailey

My friend, Simon T. Bailey, is one truly gifted individual!  After meeting him at an ISES Event in San Francisco several years ago, I became so inspired by Simon’s motivational words, and we instantly connected and became good friends.

Voted the best motivational keynote speaker by Meetings and Conventions Magazine, Simon lives up to his reputation by bringing out the brilliance already within you.

I love what Simon has to share.  He encourages you to search for the brilliance that lies within yourself and to go above and beyond both your own and other people’s expectations of yourself.

I will let Simon speak for himself:

Your mouth is the door that creates your future.  Your words are the keys that unlock it.

We spend so much time climbing the invisible ladder, only to discover that its rungs don’t reach the top like we thought.  Instead of trying to move vertically from bottom to top, how can you move horizontally, from A to Z?  Build relationships with people.  Solve their problems and make their businesses and lives better.  Be an MVP (Most Valuable Person).

Personal Service with a Brilliant Touch comes down to these five insights:

  • People – Hire for attitude, and teach for success.  Teaching doesn’t  fix what Human Resources doesn’t catch. Create an employee orientation that plants the microchip in the mind of every employee that represents your brand. When I worked at Disney, it was two days of drinking the Disney Kool-Aid, and sniffing the pixie dust. I have been gone from the mouse house for almost ten years, and I still have residue of magic in my veins.
  • Product – What problem is your product or service solving? What solution is your product providing to the end-user? Does everyone who needs to know it, “get it” and constantly hear it on a daily basis?  According to Harvard, you have to hear something five to seven times before it sticks.
  • Process – Do you remember when you were dating your spouse? You did whatever you had to do to capture their attention. If it meant fine dining, vintage wine, long walks in the park, and hours of conversation, you did it. Yes, it was a process, but you knew that there was a payoff in the end. Well, somewhere along the way you stopped doing what caught them the first time. By now, you know where this is leading – whatever you did to catch them, you have to do to keep them.
  • Price – If you are just selling a product or service, then you are competing on price, however, if you can demonstrate your value-add, then does the price really matter? For instance I pay on average $11.50 for a burger at Five Guys Burger and Fries, which is a treat 4 times a year as compared to $6 or $7 dollars at other fast food restaurants. Why? It’s that extra scoop of fries that gets me every time. Don’t tell my doctor about my addiction to French fries. This can be our secret.
  • Praise – What gets recognized gets repeated! Whenever I frequent BoneFish Grill which  (if I am lucky) is once every six or nine months, I am greeted by Sue, a server who calls me by name. When I receive my check it says “thank you.” WOW – what a brilliant touch. What can you do in your business to add a signature touch?

Think differently and escape the sea of sameness. Think Brilliantly and soar above average-i-tis!

Hug your babies. Their future and your life is precious, priceless, and filled with possibility.

Put away the microscope of yesterday and look through the telescope of your tomorrow. It’s really Brilliant!

Pink Candy Table

Pink Candy TableThe team at Merryl Brown Events loves nothing more than a hot, pink party. We are having a great time creating and sourcing the elements that will go into our BCRC Presents: Think Pink event on September 24th, 2011!! One of the sweetest parts of this event will be the pink dessert table, laden with every imaginable pink confection. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for a gorgeous, delicious and decadent evening of pure pink fabulousness~

Thinking “Out of the Box”

I recently visited  the fabulous shop P o r c h on Santa Claus Lane, where I came across magnificent sustainable garden designs by Jeffrey Gordon Smith Landscape Architecture.  I love his masterpiece “Out of the Box,” which was designed as a demonstration at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Gardens.

Smith’s combination of rugged salvaged materials and succulent plants create a spectacular, eco-conscious garden. I could see creating a gorgeous green event around this installation.

I am also so inspired by Smith’s installation at the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show!

Thank you to the ladies at Porch for introducing me to this talented artist’s work! It is always a treat to discover something or someone new. I am always inspired by great art and these pieces would be the piece de resistance at any green event!

The Beautiful Santa Lucia Preserve

We recently had the opportunity to produce a spectacular Mexican inspired destination wedding at the Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel.  The Santa Lucia Preserve is an exclusive, 20,000-acre private community tucked away in the Santa Lucia mountains – truly a hidden treasure amongst the popular destinations of Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Big Sur.

Access to the Preserve is limited to homeowners, their families, and their guests.  While the Preserve extends over 20,000 acres, only 2,000 acres are developed, and only 300 homes are allowed on the property.  The privacy and seclusion of the Preserve showcase the surrounding natural beauty, including the breathtaking redwood groves, and the plethora of wild animals that roam the grounds.  Also located on the property are the gorgeous Spanish Colonial-style Hacienda, a magnificant rustic barn used for events and weddings, and a world-class equestrian center.

We created lovely wedding ceremony at the Preserve in the middle of a redwood grove, followed by a reception in a barn which we transformed into a simply stunning version of what felt to me like the beautiful movie Like Water for Chocolate. It was as if we were in old Mexico, a hundred years ago, in another time and place. While we cannot yet show images of the event, once the story is published , we will show you just how exceptional it was! We had the absolute pleasure of working with Veranda Magazine, which will feature this sensational wedding in an upcoming issue.

Should you venture outside of the Preserve, you must make a trip to our favorite restaurant, Mundaka in Carmel. We coordinated a charming rehearsal dinner there that was a culinary masterpiece! The paella alone was worth the trip!

The Santa Lucia Preserve is such a lovely and charming venue for any special occasion, but it is really among the most gorgeous places for weddings that I have ever seen.  We worked with an amazing team of vendors at the Preserve, which made the experience even more fantastic! Wedding planning in a place like this is truly a wonderful experience!

Eco-chic Elegance: How to Produce a Green Event

Eco-friendly weddings or green events can be just as elegant and beautiful as any other special occasion. Going green doesn’t mean having to sacrifice style and sophistication. In fact, creating environmentally friendly events enables planners to use great creativity and innovation.

To produce wonderful green events, consider these six steps:

1. Begin with the end in mind

2. Invite less people

3. Source event components locally or regionally

4. Consider going paperless or using recycled materials

5. Beg, borrow, or rent

6. Sort your waste

1. Begin with the end in mind

Before you buy those plastic leis or cheap props, think about where they will end up after the event. Consider choosing items that can be recycled or are made of recycled materials. There are elegant alternatives to extravagant, wasteful décor. Create centerpieces made with local, organic fruits and vegetables, floral elements, or plant materials that can be given away or placed back into nature afterwards.

Schools, homeless shelters, and senior homes will appreciate beautiful centerpieces and leftover fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be thrown away.

2. Invite less people

Decreasing your guest list is the single best thing you can do to green an event. More guests equal more consumption, which equals more waste.

3. Source event components locally or regionally

Serve locally grown, organic foods whenever possible. Food will be fresher, tastier, and often less expensive. Additionally, you will be supporting local farmers and businesses, reducing the costs for the transportation of food, and lowering carbon emissions. Source your flowers at one of your local farmers’ markets, and ask for organic flowers when possible.

4. Consider going paperless or use recycled materials

We love to use online invitation and stationery companies such as Paperless Post and Cocodot, which offer elegant and affordable alternatives to Evite. Every little bit helps. Consider sending save the date’s through online services and sending physical invitations made of recycled content materials. We love Twisted Limb’s lovely recycled paper invitations.

Utilize websites, press releases, blogs, and social media to disseminate information. It is an easy and paperless way of letting people know about upcoming events and receiving faster responses.

5. Beg, borrow, or rent

Use what you already have as props and décor for your event. Not only will you cut costs, but your event will be more personal and meaningful. Borrow from friends and family. See what is available for rent before you buy. Scour thrift and vintage stores.

6. Sort your waste

Provide food compost and recycle bins at your event. Consider hiring a professional to sort waste generated by your event. A high diversion rate will enhance the sustainability profile of your event.

With these six tips, you are well on your way to creating sustainable events that are simple and beautiful.

From Concept to Completion

When I find something that I absolutely love, I let my imagination run with it and I dig deep to find images, words, music and foods that help to complete the picture. I am always looking for event inspiration at every turn, since we wear many hats as wedding planners, party planners and corporate event planners!  My inspiration can come from a painting in a gallery, the sights and smells of a quaint French cafe, or a beautiful fashion spread in Vogue. Each of our events begins with a moment of inspiration that is then formed over time and finally brought to life. Sometimes the event turns out exactly the way I had first envisioned it to be, and sometimes, it goes in an entirely different and even more wonderful direction because of the fabulous collaborative process that I am lucky enough to have with many of our vendors.

Either way, the process of concept to completion exemplifies the true beauty and art of creative event planning.

The amazingly talented Montecito Interior Designer, Marc Normand Gelinas, creates fine art renderings of our initial ideas and vision for our events.  With his expertise in watercolor renderings and line drawings, our event concepts can be executed precisely and skillfully. Marc’s illustrations allow everyone involved to see the concept that I am only able to describe with words.

It is so wonderful to be able to describe an idea to someone, only to see it sketched out beautifully hours later.

Below, is Marc’s charming and magical watercolor rendering of our concept for the 2010 Community Environmental Council’s Green Gala – Enchanted Fairy Forest.

And here is our final product, the lovely Green Gala filled with fairies, pixies, wood nymphs, and satyrs in a twinkling, enchanted forest glen.

Here is another one of Marc’s elegant illustrations, this time for of our “Heaven on Earth” Angels Foster Care Benefit.

"Heaven on Earth"

And here is our completed product, a mesmerizing all white affair with beautiful angels and angelic decor! I had imagined long, white tables covered in white silky linens, with ribbon wrapped napkins and feather embellishments, bling vases with white flowers and lots of candles. We ended up with shorter tables but with all of the other elements that I had envisioned and the result was a beautiful, memorable and elegant party.

It is so wonderful to experience the process of unfoldment, to plant a seed of an idea and cultivate it as it grows into a magnificent flower for all to behold.  And like a flower, an event does not last forever, but the photographs and memories will remain! To see our vision come to life is truly a joy!

Get Inspired!

Inspiration lies around us all.  We just have to take a moment from our busy lives to find it!

Get out into nature and explore! Take a long stroll along the beach, sit in a lovely garden on a sunny day, or embark on an adventure in the woods.  Release your inhibitions, and let your imagination set fire!

I get so much of my inspiration from just looking at the beach and ocean.  We have incorporated driftwood, sea glass, beach stones, and sand into the decor for several of our events, and the best thing about using natural elements, is that we will return many of these items back to the beach once the event is over!

I can envision an event in just about any garden that I see. This is a little rose garden tea party in Montecito that we styled a few years ago. Sweetness.

We use trees, flowers, succulents or other natural elements in almost every event we produce.  They add such a simple, yet lovely touch to any special occasion.

Travel – near or far! Leave your comfort zone and immerse yourself in different cultures, stumble upon secret hideaways, and embrace local customs and food.

So many of our events are fashioned after places that I have traveled to.  I love discovering tucked away shops, cafes, parks, and secluded spots with breathtaking views.  I remember the character and essence of these special places and  and I incorporate them into our events, transforming our venues into incredible cultural experiences.

We recreated a French marketplace featuring a , confiserie, patisserie and boulangerie filled with freshly baked pastries and baguette for a small school with an even smaller budget! With a lot of hard work and heart, we were able to create something quite charming and memorable.

For an intimate dinner gathering, we infused Asian flavors and flair into our food and decor.

For a lovely luncheon, we were inspired by Moroccan elegance.

Appreciate art and fashion! I am not a fashionista, but I can create an event just by looking at a Vogue fashion spread.  Grace Coddington, Creative Director of Vogue, is my muse!  Her work inspires me like no other.  I cannot wait to recreate my own version of this amazingly stunning Alexander McQueen floral dress!

Daydream! Take the time to daydream.  Just sit and let your mind wander.  Close your eyes and just imagine what could be.  You can do wonders with a lot of imagination and little budget!

Keep dreaming and keep educating yourself and never stop looking, thinking and growing.  You just never know where it will lead you!
